Position Summary

The School of Communications is one of the nation’s great communications schools consisting of approximately 1100 students and seven undergraduate majors. Our undergraduate students are required to complete one internship for academic credit as part of the curriculum. In addition, the internship satisfies one unit of the Experiential Learning Requirement for Elon University. The Director of Internships for the School of Communications oversees and manages the required professional internship program for the Cinema & Television Arts, Digital Content Management, Journalism, Media Analytics, Strategic Communications and Visual Communication majors.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in communications or related field and professional media/communications experience is required. Prior experience working with student interns is preferred.

Preferred Education and Experience

The Director of Internships position requires an energetic individual who thrives in a dynamic and collaborative work environment. The successful applicant should possess comprehensive experience in a collegiate environment working with undergraduate students, as well as the ability to effectively interact with the School of Communications Dean/Associate Dean, Registrar’s Office, Student Financial Services, the Global Education Center, other faculty/staff, students, parents, and administrators. Additionally, the Director of Internships should have experience within experiential education and career advising, the ability to work across all majors and class years, and an understanding of the commitment to the mission and student population of Elon University.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills
  • High level of organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate a diverse workload with attention to detail and the ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Experience in the use of relevant technologies, particularly with respect to assessments and career development (Symplicity and Qualtrics experience is a plus)
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills suitable for a corporate audience
  • Proficiency with MS Office and database management experience
  • A motivated work style, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a broad range of internal and external constituents
  • Ability to develop relationships with students and employers, both one-on-one and in a group setting

Job Duties

  • The Director is responsible for supporting student efforts to secure and complete professional internships through individual career advising appointments, as well as workshops and presentations. As the instructor of record for the COM 3985 Communications Internship Course, this role monitors, develops, and assesses the curriculum as well as registers the internships in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office and tracks the academic progress of each student completing an internship for academic credit. In addition, the Director is responsible for administering the internship course year-round in each semester (fall, winter, spring and summer terms) and grading assignments submitted for the course for approximately 250 students per academic year. The Director interacts with internship supervisors, employees, and the external community as well as relevant Elon staff and faculty to meet those objectives and assure the School of Communications students are properly completing their internship requirement for graduation.

Senior Assistant Director, Transfer Admissions

Admissions
The Senior Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions provides strategic leadership and day-to-day management of transfer student recruitment and admissions for Queens University of Charlotte. Reporting to the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, this position is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive transfer enrollment strategy designed to increase transfer inquiries, applications, admitted students, and enrollment. Serving as the primary admissions leader for the transfer student population, the Senior Assistant Director manages the full transfer recruitment lifecycle—from prospect identification and application generation through application evaluation, admission, enrollment, and transition to Queens. The position develops recruitment strategies and transfer pathways that make Queens an accessible and compelling destination for students seeking to complete their undergraduate education. A significant focus of the role is establishing and strengthening relationships with community colleges, four-year institutions, advisors, faculty, community-based organizations, and other partners that can create sustainable transfer pipelines to Queens. The Senior Assistant Director will work collaboratively across the University to simplify the transfer experience, improve transfer credit transparency, strengthen articulation and pathway agreements, and ensure prospective transfer students receive personalized and timely support throughout the enrollment process.

Administrative Assistant

The Administrative Assistant for University Advancement supports the daily operations of the Associate Vice President (AVP) and Annual Giving/Advancement Communications departments. This is a dynamic role that assists with a variety of communications (including presidential letters), supervises student staff and provides overall support to the AVP as well as several departments reporting to the AVP. The Administrative Assistant must be highly organized and efficient with the ability to balance multiple tasks and responsibilities; demonstrate good judgment and attention to detail; show strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; and possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The position also works closely with other departments within University Advancement and across campus. In addition, this position will support some strategic initiatives for the university including the support and growth of Regional Centers, special partnerships, and professional and continuing studies efforts.

Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement Initiatives

Reporting to the Senior Director of Alumni Engagement, the Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement Initiatives is responsible for developing and executing the strategic vision of Elon’s alumni relationship cultivation and stewardship, volunteerism and professional development efforts. The Assistant Director is responsible for building relationships with Elon alumni to engage them in activities that will enhance the future of our university. This position will design a strategic approach to identify, cultivate, and steward our alumni as partners, advocates, and investors. This position will communicate with the alumni body regularly via the monthly alumni newsletter and Elon alumni social media accounts. In addition, the Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement Initiatives will provide leadership of advancement’s alumni professional engagement efforts including, but not limited to, in-person and virtual professional development, networking opportunities and lifelong learning programs/events. The Assistant Director, in coordination with other colleagues and units across campus, will help develop, build and promote a variety of programming for alumni both on and off campus plus virtually. In addition, the Assistant Director will be responsible for managing a menu of alumni volunteer opportunities and promoting them to the alumni body. In conjunction with other members of the Alumni Engagement team, the Assistant Director will identify and recruit alumni volunteers and inspire excitement for opportunities. This position will also develop and implement a program of communication with alumni who have completed volunteer roles to inspire future and continued engagement.
