Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Elon University Campus Safety & Police Department is to protect life and property while maintaining an atmosphere conducive to the educational mission of the University. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of security functions for the campus community. Patrol campus providing a security presence, lock/unlock doors for campus, respond to alarms for fires and other areas, enforce parking and perform as backup to Dispatch functions. Use problem-solving and communications skills to effectively dispatch officers for a multi-cultural and diverse campus population to resolve public safety issues.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

One year of college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Job Duties

  • Provides security to the University community by patrolling the designated areas on foot, in a motor vehicle, or on a bicycle.
  • Aid police personnel in traffic control, crowd control, crime scene security, fire and fire alarm scenes and other duties as circumstances dictate.
  • Inspect buildings and grounds on a regular basis for unusual activities and secure all buildings and areas from intrusion and ensure that all entrances as prescribed are closed and locked as directed by the department. Additionally, unlock buildings as directed by the department if needed.
  • Provide dispatching services to the department during times when a Police Dispatcher is not available and/or when situations dictate the necessity.
  • Patrol parking lots and enforce parking regulations through warnings and/or citations as the situation dictates. Two CSOs that are assigned specific parking enforcement duties will perform that function approximately 80% of their shift time.
