Position Summary

The Database Engineer is responsible for various data functions of Enterprise Solutions and the University’s databases. Their duties include installation, monitoring, performance, security audits, and account management. The Database Engineer will automate data movement between applications and vendors to support the University’s goals. Communication and attention to detail will be essential skills to help solve complex business needs and implement data projects across the campus. Ongoing maintenance of a database requires being on call. This person will learn the business needs for interacting with the various software solutions and data and attend classes and conferences as necessary to keep skills sharp.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in STEM with minimum 3 years of experience with the following relevant work experience:
• Strong experience building and improving performance of t-sql queries, views and stored procedures.
• Strong experience gathering requirements and designing and building solutions to meet those requirements.
• Strong experience sourcing and integrating data from disparate data sources (Cloud and on-premise relational databases, APIs, files of varying formats (json, xml, csv and Excel files))
• Strong experience modeling data for both transactional and reporting systems.
• Experience with software development best practices such as agile methodologies, source code control, prototyping, and testing.
• Experience with creating and administering SSRS.
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
• Years of experience as a DBA could replace STEM field of study

Preferred Education and Experience

Master's degree in STEM

Job Duties

  • Operational Management: - Installation of new instances of SQL Server, Integration Services, and Reporting Services. - Secure data access to approved users and applications. - Protect databases with regular backups and restores. - Verify successful backups via restore testing. - Monitor database platform performance to maximize resources and licenses. - Perform regular security audits to verify data access and ensure best practices are maintained. - Work with developers with database schema, script creation, and deployment. - Support ongoing maintenance of university databases, including monthly weekend maintenance and monitoring systems after hours and providing on call support as warranted. - Enable data encryption as needed based on personally identifiable information (PII) - Manage service requests through our ticketing systems (Team Dynamics)
  • Data Movement: - Create extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) to move data between applications and vendors. - Create PowerShell scripts to automate data movement and operational management tasks. 
  • Strategy & Planning: - Create standard documents for SQL Server development and SSIS design. - Research database technology and how that can enable more efficient access/movement of data. - Consult with system analysts and application programmers on program design and access methods.
