Position Summary

The Instructional Technologist position is a part of the Learning Design and Support team within Teaching and Learning Technologies. This position primarily serves as the systems administrator for the LMS (Canvas) and all integrated instructional technologies. As an administrator, they will facilitate data-driven decision-making to enhance the instructional technology ecosystem and act as a liaison between the university and instructional technology vendors to ensure seamless integration of technologies to support innovation. Additionally, this position will play a supporting role in providing consultations, training, and advancing the use of the LMS and other instructional technologies for teaching and learning.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Master's degree in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, Curriculum and Instruction or similar field with minimum 1 -2 years of experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Minimum 3 years of experience, preferably in a higher education environment.

 

Job Duties

  • Oversee Learning Management System
    • Serve as the administrator for the university’s LMS instance by supporting users and managing the system in collaboration with the LMS vendor.
    • Serve as the primary liaison for LMS-related projects and issues, coordinating across IT, Registrar’s office, and academic departments for designing effective and user-friendly systems.
    • Serve as the administrator for other instructional technologies that integrate with the LMS by engaging campus users to implement new features and conduct user-testing, collaborating with vendors to ensure technical feasibility, and managing contracts.
    • Design and maintain Elon’s LMS structure, organizing sub-accounts, managing course data, and provisioning user accounts.
    • Collaborate with other IT teams and vendors to maintain secure integrations with SIS, SSO, and third-party tools.
    • Research, pilot, install, and manage LMS features and LTI integrations to improve teaching and learning.
    • Engage with vendor and campus users to conduct user testing to implement new features in the LMS and build a community of users on campus to advance LMS use.
    • Develop and maintain documentation, policies, and standards for LMS use and recommend best practices.
    • Actively participate in regional, national, and global communities of LMS admins.
  • Lead Data Analytics and Governance Initiatives
    • Collect, analyze, and report LMS and other instructional technology usage and system performance data to inform strategic decisions.
    • Develop dashboards and reports to measure learning quality, engagement, and ROI for instructional technologies and technology training.
    • Use analytics from LMS and other instructional technologies to evaluate student learning experience and recommend system improvements, guide instructional design decisions, and improve faculty adoption.
    • Using appropriate data governance frameworks, manage access to learning data across different instructional technologies for relevant stakeholders on campus.
    • Support institutional assessment and accreditation needs through data reporting.
  • Support TLT operations
    • Consult, train, and support faculty, staff, and students in the application of instructional technologies.
    • Collaborate with other Instructional Technologists to support the design and development of quality online and hybrid courses.
    • Develop and update instructional technology documentation that provides clear guidelines on how to effectively use the technology.
    • Develop best practices using learning theories to support and promote the effective use of instructional technologies across campus.
    • Engage with educational communities to learn about instructional technologies and take initiative to integrate them on campus.
    • Provide guidance as technology expert on educational committees.
