Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Career Advising provides professional development support to students and alumni in the College of Arts & Sciences. This professional development support is conducted through 1:1 meetings, drop-in appointments, classroom presentations and workshops, supporting various majors and departments in the College of Arts & Sciences. This position reports to the Director of Career Services for the College of Arts & Sciences and works closely with the Director of Internships for the College of Arts & Sciences as well as the Associate Director of Corporate and Employer Relations for the College of Arts & Sciences. Additionally, the Assistant Director engages in continuing education to develop new programming that meets the changing needs of students and alumni pursuing opportunities for internships, full-time positions, and acceptance into graduate and professional schools.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field with minimum 3 years of experience with the following relevant work experience: Preferred previous experience includes working within career services or academic advising in higher education, recruiting or human resources in industry.

Job Duties

  • Career Advising:
    • Meet one-on-one with undergraduate, graduate students and alumni to provide career advising in Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences. Meet with students in-person, virtually and via phone to discuss all facets of their professional development including but not limited to: resume reviews, cover letter reviews, mock interviews, offer discussions, networking, job search, internship search, career and major exploration. Support student career advising through hosting drop-in hours regularly. Tailor advising sessions to meet the unique professional development needs of each individual.
  • Create and deliver high quality and timely programs/events/workshops, including classroom presentations, geared to help Arts & Sciences students with exploring majors/careers, networking and building connections with alumni, and conducting an effective internship or full-time job search.
  • Train and supervise 1-2 student employees through the PACE program supporting projects such as peer and aspirant university research, marketing, reviewing alumni data, and creating promotional materials for the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Conduct research on assigned career community trends, such as performing and creative arts, and assist in the creation of marketing content, maintaining online/web resources, and sharing event and employment opportunities with students, faculty, and staff, utilizing email campaigns for example. Responsible for creating programming for career community liaison.
  • Collaborate with the Arts & Sciences faculty and staff, SPDC career development staff, and additional staff members across campus to support campus-wide career programming.
