Position Summary

The School of Health Sciences Lab Manager supports the educational and research missions of the Departments of Physical Therapy Education, Nursing, and Physician Assistant Studies. This person is responsible for managing and maintaining clinical skills and research lab spaces, ensuring they are safe, functional, and equipped to meet the needs of faculty and students. The Lab Manager collaborates across departments to support innovative teaching, learning, and research initiatives while promoting operational efficiency and compliance with safety standards.
This position requires a proactive, organized, and detail-oriented professional capable of balancing diverse priorities across multiple departments in a dynamic academic environment.
Scope: Oversight and management of all clinical labs and research labs in the Gerald L. Francis Center excluding the Interprofessional Simulation Center, Anatomical Gift Program and Anatomy Lab.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree – Field of study: Health Sciences, Science, Laboratory Science, or a related field (e.g., biomechanics, biological, biomedical, or occupational safety).

Minimum 1 year relevant work experience with:
• Experience maintaining equipment, and ensuring laboratories run efficiently in a high-demand, multitasking environment.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical, operational, or logistical issues.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations, local environmental laws, and relevant safety standards.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing

Board certification in a recognized professional health and safety discipline such as industrial hygiene (CIH) or safety professional (CSP).
Valid driver's license, and meet the insurability requirements to drive on behalf of the University

Job Duties

  • Safety, Training, and Compliance
    • Promote and enforce compliance with all safety protocols, including OSHA and institutional guidelines.
    • Conduct regular inspections of labs to ensure they are clean, safe, and in working order.
    • Provide safety training for faculty, students, and staff using the lab facilities.
    • Serve as a resource for faculty and students, providing guidance on proper use of lab equipment and materials.
  • Lab Operations Management
    • Oversee the daily operations of clinical skills labs and research lab spaces across the School of Health Sciences.
    • Collaborate with the relevant stakeholders on developing the expectations and process for maintaining clean and organized lab spaces. Oversee the established processes. -Example: Manage Linens in the Francis Center including ensuring that all used towels and linens are located for pick-up the night before the scheduled date.
    • Ensure all relevant SHS clinical and research lab policies and procedures are reviewed and updated annually.
    • Coordinate the scheduling, setting up, and breakdown of spaces for classes and research activities.
  • Equipment, Space and Technology Maintenance
    • Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies, ensuring timely ordering and replacement to meet educational and research needs.
    • Ensure that all lab equipment, including medical devices, and research instruments, is properly maintained and calibrated.
    • Support Units in ordering lab supplies and new equipment.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with lab equipment and coordinate vendor support or repair as needed.
    • Ensure that all lab spaces are regularly kept in a “ready for use” state.
  • Collaboration and Support
    • Collaborate with faculty from the Physical Therapy, Nursing, and Physician Assistant Studies departments to align lab resources with curriculum needs.
    • Assist in the implementation of innovative teaching and research activities in lab spaces.
    • Provide technical and logistical support for faculty-led research projects and student capstone experiences.
    • Stay current on advancements in clinical and research technologies.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Performs other related duties as assigned to support the mission and needs of the school.
