Position Summary

The Dean of Student Health and Well-Being provides visionary, strategic leadership for student learning, welfare, and well-being, which includes the supervision and success of the following departments and functions: Campus Recreation, Counseling Services, Health Promotion, Student Health Services, supervision of the HealthEU Building management, student compliance with health insurance and immunization requirements, and co-leading the HealthEU Council. The Dean also initiates and maintains collaborative relationships with faculty and staff from across the campus and with parents, community members, and other stakeholders to foster a learning environment that promotes student success, health, and well-being.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree required in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, health and wellness, or related discipline; doctorate or other terminal degree preferred

The traditional candidate for this role would be an individual with at least 10-15 years of progressive post-master’s experience in one or more student affairs functional areas, at least five of which should be at the level of director of above.

Preferred Education and Experience

The University invites candidates with non-traditional backgrounds in business, leadership and organization development, health and wellness, or other fields. The ability to translate experiences from those fields into a higher education context is essential.

Job Duties

  • Strategic Leadership 
    • Engage with University leaders and faculty to implement the university’s vision for the campus student experience, guided by university initiatives for enhancing health and well-being, intercultural and multifaith learning, academic-residential partnerships, social climate and out-of-class engagement, civic engagement, mentoring, and intellectual climate 
    • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team for Student Life, sharing responsibility for leading the division and implementing the Student Life Five Year Plan and annual priorities of the division and the university 
    • Maintain formal and informal contact with students and ensure that departments, programs, and initiatives are responsive to student needs and development 
  • Administration 
    • Formulate and execute short-term and long-range planning for Campus Recreation, Counseling Services, Health Promotion, Student Health Services, and HealthEU building management; work with staff to coordinate student compliance with health insurance and immunization requirements; manage all aspects of the university’s external contract for the provision of student health services 
    • Support divisional and departmental strategic planning, goal setting, priority completion, evaluation and assessment, and data-driven decision making 
    • Prepare and monitor budgets ($3 million operating[JLP1.1]), equipment and capital requests, and expenditures, providing effective stewardship of resources to meet the priorities of the university and division 
    • Advise the Vice President on key campus life initiatives, including program development, policy implementation, facilities planning, and risk management; serve as a member of the Student Life Vice President’s Senior Leadership Team 
    • Provide leadership to university critical incident and disaster teams; co-lead the Infectious Disease Response Team, serve as a key leader for health and human services needs upon activiation of the Emergency Operations Center; counsel and respond to concerned parents, students, or faculty/staff; and advise the Vice President for Student Life and other senior staff regarding critical situations 
    • Lead university-wide efforts to promote holistic health and well-being and co-chair the HealthEU Council 
    • Provide timely and effective response to inquiries from parents and family members of students, alumni, national organizations, and other stakeholders 
  • Supervision 
    • Recruit, supervise, and provide professional development support for all direct reports, including: 
      • Director of Campus Recreation 
      • Director of Counseling Services 
      • Director of Health Promotion 
      • Student Health Insurance and Immunization Compliance Manager 
      • HealthEU Building Manager (dual report with the Director of HealthEU Initiatives) 
      • Administrative Assistant for Health and Well-Being (dual report with the Director of HealthEU Initiatives) 
    • Serve as the key university point-of-contact for the university’s contract with Cone Health to provide medical care and indirectly supervise the Health Services Practice Manager and University Physician/Medical Director 
  • Additional Responsibilities 
    • Support university events, including, but not limited to: Convocations, Commencement, Family Weekend, and events related to Admissions and/or New Student Orientation 
    • Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, which includes serving in a rotational role as a Senior Administrator On Call and supporting staff who are on-call in emergency response roles or providing initial outreach and follow-up support for student concerns 
    • Serve on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees, including: 
      • HealthEU Council (co-chair) 
      • Infectious Disease Response Team (co-chair) 
      • Emergency Operations Center (health and human services unit leader) 
      • Academic and Student Life Joint Deans Council 
    • Other related duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Life
