Position Summary

The Art Department Studio Manager will be responsible for supporting the operation and safety of departmental studio facilities. The role centers on the Ceramics studio while also providing oversight across painting, drawing, photography, and digital art. The position will assist faculty and students with day-to-day studio needs, coordinate equipment maintenance and safety compliance, and supervise departmental work-study students.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

- Bachelor's degree in Art or a related discipline, or significant equivalent work experience in studio arts, fabrication, or studio management.

- Experience in technical oversight, facilities support, or hands-on operations in art studios, workshops, labs, or comparable environments.
Demonstrated ability to learn new technical systems, equipment, and safety protocols quickly and independently.

- Strong organizational and multitasking skills; ability to manage multiple spaces and responsibilities simultaneously.

- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to train and supervise student staff.
Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies as needed.

Preferred Education and Experience

- Experience working in or managing a ceramics studio, including familiarity with kilns, clay bodies, glazes, and related equipment.

- Experience working in other art studio environments such as painting, drawing, photography, digital arts, or woodworking

- Experience with OSHA, EPA, or institutional safety compliance in a studio, lab, or workshop setting.

- Experience with facilities coordination and supervising employees, student workers, or volunteers.

- MFA or graduate-level training in a studio art discipline.

 

Job Duties

  • Assume primary oversight responsibility for the Ceramics studio, including day-to-day operations, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Assist in overseeing day-to-day operations of additional department studio spaces, including Painting, Foundations, Intermedia, Photography, Drawing, the equipment cage, and the wood shop.
  • Help to ensure equipment is functional, properly maintained, and safe for student and faculty use; aid in coordinating repairs and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety to help maintain OSHA, EPA, and institutional safety compliance; monitor and implement safety protocols across all studios.
  • Maintain records for studio usage, safety inspections, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to studio equipment or facilities.
  • Supervise 10–12 work-study students per semester, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing guidance on studio procedures and safety.
